South Central Railway’s Bio-diesel blending initiative
The South Central Railway is the first in the country to take to the blending of 5% bio-diesel to its high speed diesel for its locomotives. To meet this end it established two bio-diesel units at Kacheguda and at Sanatnagar in 2015. Recently, ratio-blending facility was also unveiled in Kacheguda. It offers a more advanced substitute to the earlier system of sequential blending. Bio-diesel and regular high speed diesel (HSD) flow into a batch controller and then into the fuel tank of the engine from two different pipelines. The facility of inline blending was established by Indian Oil Corporation. Their mixing ratio in the process is as perfect as recommended by Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) of Indian Railways. The blend can easily be increased too. The SCR is also planning to establish four more blending units in Adilabad, Gooty, Nallapadu and Vijayawada. In its current set up the Southern Railway is expecting Rs. 85 crore savings annually.
